Hinging on the number of axle-ends also called 4WD or 4x4 / 4×4; 6WD or 6x6 / 6×6; or fully written out as four-wheel drive, six-wheel drive, etc.

In the early 20th century, for two-axled, four-wheel drive vehicles, the abbreviation "FWD" was also used – for instance by the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company (started in 1909), which renamed itself "FWD Corporation" in 1958. However, since the mass adoption of front-wheel drive on many passenger cars since the 1960s/1970s, the abbreviation 'FWD' is more frequently used to indicate the latter.
